We had a near-perfect weekend at Rockingham Motor Speedway. The weather helped in no small way with three days of glorious sunshine making it my best ever visit to ‘The Rock’.
Friday was test day and Kevin and I set about getting back into the groove after a disappointing Oulton Park. With only three half-hour sessions we had to get on with it and Kevin duly posted his best time ever despite one session being curtailed due to a problem for one of the other cars. We felt ready for a great weekend of racing.
Saturday started at 0900 with qualifying. I drove 3 laps to scrub in a set of tyres and qualify for the first race. Kevin then did the main qualifying, as he was due to start the race, again posting his best ever a time for a 3rd place spot on the grid. Confidence was mounting!!
The first race started at 2 pm and Kevin drove a blinder slotting into second off the start. He kept up a good pace and had several tussles handing over to me at about 25 minutes. Giving it my all we hauled in the cars in front and finally made the pass for the lead with a mere 10 minutes to go, bagging the fastest lap along the way. One down, one to go!!
Sunday was equally sunny and we were on at 11.00. This was great and we were on pole due to our win the previous day. Kevin again took the start keeping all in order and bettering his first race time, handing it over to me as per schedule. Again I gave it my best and despite my FIA rated driver time handicap of 14 seconds and our success penalty from the first win of 18 seconds, I made the move for the lead with about 8 minutes to go.
The fastest lap was also in the bag (lap record?).
What a great week end! They don’t come this good very often so we enjoyed it to the full. Huge thanks are due to Kevin and Track Club for giving us a perfect car, as ever.
Next stop, Donington Britcar with David Mason OBE in the MacConnal Mason Galleries Ferrari 458.
